| VII) Kinh Kẻ Bần Tiện (Vasalasuttam)
(Sn 21) Như vầy tôi nghe: |
27. Vasalasuttaü 1 The Discourse on the
Outcastes Thus I have heard: At one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Sàvatthi at
Anàthapiõóika's grounds in Jeta's Wood.

| 116. Người phẫn nộ, hiềm hận, Ác nhân, gièm pha người, Ác tà kiến, man trá, Ðược biết là bần tiện. |
116. That man who is
angry, who has enmity, is bad, and insolent, who has wrong views, and is deceitful, he one should know as an outcaste. 117. Whether once born, or twice born, he who is violent to creatures here, who has no sympathy with creatures, he one should know as an outcaste. 118. He who beseiges and destroys villages and market towns, who is well known as an oppressor, he one should know as an outcaste. 119. (He who), whether in the village or the wilderness, takes by theft what is not given, those things loved by others, he one should know as an outcaste. 120. He who has taken on a debt, and when pressed (to pay it) runs away, saying: There is no debt due to you, he one should know as an outcaste. 121. He who desiring a trifle, after slaying a person going along the path, takes that trifle, he one should know as an outcaste. |
| 122. Ai vì mình, vì người, Hay vì nhân tài sản, Làm nhân họ nói láo, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 123. Ai được thấy giữa vợ Của bà con, bạn thân, Ép buộc hay ưng thuận, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 124. Ai với mẹ hay cha, Già yếu, tuổi trẻ qua, Tuy giàu không giúp đỡ, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 125. Ai với mẹ hay cha, Với anh chị, nhạc mẫu, Làm hại, dùng lời mắng, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 126. Ai được hỏi mục đích, Lại khuyên lời trái đích, Khuyên bảo nên che đậy, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 127. Ai làm các nghiệp ác, Muốn không biết mình làm, Ai làm hạnh che đậy, Ðược biết là kẻ bần tiện. 128. Ai đến nhà người khác, Ăn món ăn ngon lành, Lại không đáp lễ lại, Ðược biết là bần tiện. 129. Ai nói dối lường gạt, Sa-môn, Bà-la-môn, Hay các người nghèo khác, Ðược biết là bần tiện.

122.That
man who, for his own sake, for the sake of others, or for wealth, when asked to bear witness, speaks falsely, he one should know as an outcaste. 123. He who is seen (misbehaving) with the wives of friends or relatives, whether forcibly, or with consent, he one should know as an outcaste. 124.He who, when his mother or father has grown old, with their youth gone, though having much, does not support them, he one should know as an outcaste. 125. He who strikes, or annoys with words, his mother or father, brother or sister, or mother-in-law, he one should know as an outcaste. 126. He who, when he is asked what is good, teaches that which is not good, who conceals things when he gives advice, he one should know as an outcaste. 127. He who, having done a bad deed, longs thus: May they not know about me he who conceals what he is doing, he one should know as an outcaste. 128. He who, having gone to another's family, and eaten good food, does not return the honour when (his benefactor) comes, he one should know as an outcaste. 129. He who deceives a brahmin, or an ascetic, or another mendicant with words that are false, he one should know as an outcaste. 130. He who annoys with words a brahmin, or an ascetic, when mealtime is at hand, and does not give (him food), he one should know as an outcaste. 131. He who speaks to those who are bad here, being entangled by delusion, (because of) coveting a trifle, he one should know as an outcaste. 132. He who (speaks and) extols himself, and yet despises another, who is debased through his own conceit, he one should know as an outcaste. 133. (He who) is annoying, stingy, who has bad longings, is selfish, crafty, unconscientious, and shameless, he one should know as an outcaste. 134. He who abuses a Buddha, or else one of his disciples, a wanderer, or a householder, he one should know as an outcaste. |
| 135. Ai không phải La-hán, Tự nhận là La-hán, Kẻ trộm Phạm thiên giới, Chính tối hạ bần tiện. Những hàng bần tiện này, Ta nói rõ cho Ông. 136. Bần tiện không vì sanh, Phạm chí không vì sanh, Do hành, thành bần tiện, Do hành, thành Phạm chí. 137. Do đây, nên hiểu biết, Như Ta trình bày rõ, Màtanga được danh, Bần tiện, ăn thịt chó. 138. Danh tối thượng khó đạt, Màtanga đạt được, Nhiều Sát-ly, Phạm chí, Ðến hầu hạ vị ấy. 139. Vị ấy leo thiên xa, Trên đường lớn không bụi, Từ bỏ mọi dục tham, Ðạt được Phạm thiên giới, Thọ sanh không ngăn chận, Vị ấy sanh Phạm thiên. |
135.He
who, not being a Worthy One claims that he is a Worthy One, is a thief in the world with its brahmàs, he is the worst of the outcastes. These, indeed, are said to be outcastes, those whom I have explained to you. 136. One is not an outcaste by birth, by birth one is not a brahmin, by deeds one becomes an outcaste, one becomes a brahmin by deeds. 137. You can know it also by this, as I (give you) this example: Sopaka, an untouchable's son, was renowned as Màtaïga. 138. This Màtaïga attained the highest repute, which was very hard to obtain, and many nobles and brahmins came to attend on him. 139. He ascended the way going to the gods, that dust-free great path, and having put away sensual desire, he went to the brahma worlds. Birth did not prevent him from being reborn in the brahma worlds. |
| 140. Có những Bà-la-môn, Sanh gia đình Ðạo sư, Hay sanh những gia đình Quyến thuộc với bùa chú, Họ vẫn thường được thấy, Làm các điều ác nghiệp, 141. Hiện tại bị khinh miệt, Ðời sau sanh ác thú, Thọ sanh không ngăn chận, Sanh ác thú đáng khinh. 142. Bần tiện không vì sanh, Phạm chí không vì sanh, Do hành thành bần tiện, Do hành thành Phạm chí. |
140.
Brahmins, though born in a family of scholars, and acquainted with the lore, are continuously to be seen (doing) deeds that are bad. 141. Reproachable in this life, |

nói vậy, Bà-la-môn Bhàradvàja bạch Thế Tôn:
Con nay qui y Tôn giả Gotama, qui y
Pháp và qui y chúng Tỷ-kheo. Mong Tôn giả Gotama nhận con làm đệ tử
cư sĩ, từ nay cho đến mạng chung, con trọn đời qui ngưỡng. |
After this
was said, the brahmin Aggikabhàradvàja said this to the Gracious
One:
Excellent, reverend Gotama!
